Battle of Santiago de
Cuba
Above: A colorful painting of the Battle of Santiago
de Cuba. American ships open fire on the fleeing Spanish Fleet
shown on the left of the painting. To the right of the painting
is the US fleet with the USS Oregon in the foreground.
Within a matter of hours, the bulk of the Spanish Navy would be
beached on the shores of Cuba and the United States would assume
a leadership role on the world stage.
Above: A close-up of the USS Oregon. The Oregon
was the only ship of the Indiana class to have a red, white,
and blue bow shield instead of the more decorative figurehead.
